MP3
MP3, also know as MPEG Layer 3,
is a compressed audio format which take up a lot less space than that of
the same wave file. MP3's sampled at 128K/s are about CD quality and ten
times smaller than their respective wave. It's possible to fit hundreds
of MP3's on a 650 MB whereas an audio CD is usually limited to 74 minutes.
For these reasons MP3's have gained much popularity lately. In order to
play one, you need a decoder aka a player. There are many MP3 players out
there, my favorite of which is WinAMP.
In order to create an MP3 you need an encoder such as L3enc.

because it's so long. It goes in to great detail, though.
